Mandatory City Registration

Once You Arrive in Germany, You Are Required to Register Your Address With the Local City Office

Mandatory City Registration

A “reporting obligation“ (“Meldepflicht“) exists in Germany. If you are staying in Germany on a long-term visa other than a “Tourist Visa”, registration of your living address is mandatory with the relevant city office.

You have to register within 2 weeks with the Citizens’ Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt). Make a timely appointment at the registration office as the waiting times can be up to a couple of weeks and prepare the required documents: registration form, valid passport, lease, or a confirmation from your landlord (Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung).

Note: If no appointments are available on the online portal of Einwohnermeldeamt or Bürgeramt, send an email provided on the website to request an urgent appointment.
