IT Specialists With Significant Work Experience - What Are The Work Visa Requirements?

As an IT specialist with substantial work experience (a minimum of 3 years within the past 7 years), you are eligible for a residence permit to pursue skilled work in the information and communications technology sector in Germany, even if you do not possess a university degree or vocational training, provided your gross annual salary is at least 49,680 €. Generally, B1 level proficiency in German is necessary, however, exceptions may be granted in specific cases, such as when the working language within the company is solely English.

The issuance of a long-term residence permit is the responsibility of the appropriate foreign nationals’ registration office in Germany. To enter Germany for work purposes, you must first apply for a national visa at the German Embassy, which is a prerequisite for entering the country.

Note: One possibility to explore is obtaining a residence permit under Section 19c (2) of the Residence Act – “Aufenthaltsgesetz (AufenthG)”, in combination with Section 6 of the Ordinance on the Employment of Foreigners – “Beschäftigungsverordnung (BeschV)”. This allows you to secure qualified employment in Germany, irrespective of the type of degree you possess.

Did You Know?

While Berlin is renowned for its role as a hub of innovation and startups, other German cities like Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, and Düsseldorf are also recognized as centers focusing on innovation and sustainability, the German Startup Association terms “Startups are the driving force of the Germany future economy…”. In most Startups, English is the primary language used in the office, a reflection of the increasing internationalization of Germany. Not being fluent in German shouldn’t deter you from applying for positions in these areas, as many Startup founders in Germany also do not speak fluent German.
