Make an appointment at the local foreign national’s registration office (Ausländerbehörde). For the appointment you generally need:

1. Filled and signed application form – available on the website of your local Ausländerbehörde
2. Valid passport and visa
3. Apartment Registration certificate
4. Work contract or proof of financial means
5. Valid health insurance*
6. Fees are payable at the time of appointment and depend on the city. These can usually be paid with an EC card (Visa or Mastercard Debit and Credit cards are sometimes not accepted) or cash at the machine within the building.

Note: If no appointments are available on the online portal of the Ausländerbehörde, send an email provided on the website to request an urgent appointment.

*Health insurance without an employer

Even if you’re not working for an employer, health insurance is still essential. The kind of coverage you need varies based on your specific group:

Families: Typically, children, spouses, and registered life partners can be collectively covered under family insurance, provided one adult is enrolled in statutory health insurance.
Trainees, Students, and Interns: Usually, you're required to have statutory health insurance, although there are exceptions, like for students over 30 years old.
Jobseekers: Non-EU or EEA citizens (includes Indians, Pakistanis and others who come from a Non-EU country) who are unemployed, such as those with a visa to seek employment, must obtain private health insurance. Special rates are often available for expatriates in these situations.
