EU Blue Card (Blau Karte)

The EU Blue Card is a residence permit for non-EU nationals as outlined in the Section 18g AufenthG (German Residence Act) – EU Blue Card. It is aimed at attracting highly skilled professionals to work in European Union countries. It provides a path to long-term residence and work across the EU. The requirements for obtaining an EU Blue Card can vary slightly between member states. As of 2024, the key requirements for obtaining an EU Blue Card in Germany are:

Basic Requirements

1. Non-EU Citizenship

  • Applicants must be non-EU nationals.

2. Higher Education Qualification

  • A university degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s) is typically required.
  • The degree must be recognized or equivalent to a German degree.

3. Job Offer in Germany

  • The applicant must have a binding job offer or a work contract in Germany.
  • The job should be in line with the applicant’s qualifications.

Salary Threshold

  • The position must have a minimum annual gross salary. In 2024, this threshold is set at 45,300 Euros for most professions (Pre-approval by the Federal Employment Agency - Bundesagentur für Arbeit is required). If the salary is above 56,400 Euros, no pre-approval is required).
  • For shortage occupations (like scientists, mathematicians, engineers, doctors, and IT specialists), the threshold is lower, at 41,041.80 Euros as of 1st Jan 2024. Here, as well, pre-approval by the Federal Employment Agency - Bundesagentur für Arbeit is required if the salary is below 41,041.80 Euros; no pre-approval is required for a salary above 43,992 Euros.

Application Process

  • Valid Passport: A current and valid passport is necessary.
  • Completed Application Forms: For the EU Blue Card and for a residence permit.
  • Documentation: Proof of qualification, job contract, and evidence of salary.

Additional Considerations

  • Language Skills: While not a formal requirement, proficiency in the German language can be advantageous for integration and employment.
  • Health Insurance: Applicants must have adequate health insurance coverage.
  • Duration of Stay: The Blue Card is initially valid for up to four years, or for the duration of the employment contract plus three months if the contract is less than four years.
  • Permanent Residency: Blue Card holders can apply for permanent residency in Germany after 33 months of employment, or 21 months if they can prove B1 level proficiency in the German language.

Family Reunification

  • The EU Blue Card also facilitates easier family reunification, allowing family members to join the cardholder in Germany.
