Paternal Leave and Benefits in Germany

  • It amounts to 65-100% of the parent’s average monthly income before birth, up to a maximum of €1,800 per month.

3. Duration:

  • Paid for up to 14 months after birth.
  • These months can be divided between parents, but one parent must take at least two months for the family to receive the full benefit.

4. ElterngeldPlus:

  • An option allowing parents to extend the period they receive benefits by receiving half the payment for double the time.
  • Useful for those who wish to work part-time during parental leave.

5. Bonus Months for Partners:

  • Encourages both parents to take leave by offering extra months of Elterngeld when both parents participate in childcare and work part-time.

6. Eligibility:

  • Available to all parents who take time off work or work fewer hours to care for their child.
  • Both employed and self-employed parents are eligible, as well as parents in education or training, and unemployed parents.

7. Application Process:

  • Parents must apply for Elterngeld at their local Elterngeldstelle (parental benefits office).

Additional Benefits

  • Kindergeld (Child Benefit): A monthly payment to parents to help cover the costs of raising children, regardless of the parents’ income.
  • Childcare Allowance: Subsidies for childcare costs in some regions.
