Becoming a German citizen (Einbürgerung) can be achieved through various paths, which are primarily based on residency, ancestry, marriage, and naturalization. The requirements and timelines for each path can differ. Here's an overview as of 2023:

1. Naturalization (Einbürgerung durch Naturalisation):

  • Residency Requirement: Typically, you need to have lived in Germany for at least 8 years on a legal residence permit. This period can be reduced to 7 years if you complete an integration course, and in some cases to 6 years for exceptional integration.
  • Language Proficiency: You must prove B1 level proficiency in the German language.
  • Financial Stability: You should be able to support yourself and your dependents without recourse to social assistance or unemployment benefits (Arbeitslosengeld II).
  • No Criminal Record: Applicants must not have any serious criminal convictions.
  • Pass a Citizenship Test: The test (Einbürgerungstest) covers German law, society, and living.
  • Renounce Previous Citizenship: Germany generally requires you to give up your previous citizenship, but there are exceptions, such as for EU nationals or in cases where renunciation is impossible or extremely difficult.

2. Citizenship by Descent (Abstammungsprinzip):

  • If at least one of your parents was a German citizen at the time of your birth, you might be eligible for German citizenship.
  • The laws have specific provisions for children born to German parents outside of Germany and for those born in Germany to non-German parents under certain conditions.

3. Citizenship by Birth (Geburtsortsprinzip):

  • Children born in Germany to non-German parents may acquire German citizenship if one parent has been legally residing in Germany for at least 8 years and has an unlimited right of residence at the time of the child's birth.

4. Citizenship by Marriage (Einbürgerung durch Heirat):

  • Spouses of German citizens can apply for citizenship after being married for at least 2 years and living in Germany for at least 3 years.
  • Other standard requirements like language proficiency, financial stability, and no criminal record apply.

5. Dual Citizenship (Doppelte Staatsbürgerschaft):

  • Germany usually does not allow dual citizenship, but there are exceptions, such as for EU citizens or in cases where giving up the original citizenship is not possible or very difficult.
  • Children born to one German and one foreign parent, or to parents who have dual citizenship, may also hold dual citizenship.
