Radio and TV Tax – Rundfunkbeitrag

As of 2024, the radio fee in Germany, known as the “Rundfunkbeitrag,” is set at €18.36 per month for private households. This fee is mandatory for everyone above 18 years of age, companies, institutions, and public interest bodies in Germany, regardless of their actual media use. This fee finances public broadcasting media channels like ARD, ZDF, and Deutschlandradio, ensuring their independence and the broad, high-quality range of content they offer.

Payment of the Rundfunkbeitrag can be managed in various ways. Typically, you can wait for the broadcasting service (Beitragsservice) to contact you by mail after you register your address at the city hall, or you can contact their offices directly. The registration form and detailed instructions are available on their official website. The fee can be paid monthly, quarterly, bi-annually, or annually.

In shared living situations, such as shared apartments, the fee is split among the residents, with only one fee charged per household. This means that if you live in a shared apartment, only one of the tenants needs to pay the fee, and the cost can be shared among all roommates. However, if you live in a dormitory with a private room or with a host family, different rules may apply. In the case of a host family, they are typically responsible for paying the fee.

If the Rundfunkbeitrag is not paid, there are consequences. The Beitragsservice may send a collection agency, and the unpaid amount could be directly withdrawn from your account, along with additional late payment fees. Non-payment can also negatively affect your credit score in Germany.
